Work 0 0 2 min read The need for a support system gisinitiative March 23, 2021 Day 21 of #dwarfismawarenessmonth We all need to have people we bond with, especially us women. We need a tribe of sisters to help us navigate through life. I am blessed to have a wonderful tribe of women and men who hold me up, but growing up I didnβt have girls βborn differentβ who were my age. All my friends and sisters are average height, so they never really understood some of my challenges. So a few years back, I made the intention of connecting with different women with different disabilities. It is one of the best decisions I have ever made! I am glad that now I have a more diverse tribe that includes other Little women in my life . Women that get it on another level and that has made my life even richer and a whole lot happier! Alhamdulillah!! My advice to everyone is that if you want something ,you must take the necessary steps to achieve it. Itβs not enough to wish for it but you must also be intentional and deliberate in your efforts. To the parents of children with Dwarfism, please guide your child to make connections with others β born different β, doesnβt matter whether they are girls or boys . Right now because of the internet we live in a global village, Maa shaa Allah It will help your child so much!! And to my ever growing tribe of sisters online and offline, the ones from day one ,Gwenny Kyoshabire, to the ones I have just met or connected with this week LeeAnne Williams thank you is not enough. I am beyond blessed to have you ladies in my life and I love you! Ka jambo to my gorgeous Meetu Princess Joyful Florah and the beautiful Mulhumbira Dinah #Sisterhood #gratefulheartalways
Lifestyle 0 0 1 min read Modify your home for your child with dwarfism. gisinitiative March 23, 2021 Day 22 of #dwarfismawarenessmonth The world was designed for someone of average height so it becomes daunting especially for a child with dwarfism. Small steps can be taken to make the home accessible for all inhabitants. Your child needs as much independence as possible right from the start. Making the home accessible will involve the Lp child in all household chores and activities. A step stool to reach the sink, kitchen counter, the toilet seats. Lower some of your mirrors so the child gets to look at themselves. She or he needs to look at themselves as this will help with coming to terms with who they are. Low raised furniture including beds make it easy to get on and off. Ramps will go a long way not just for the little person ( we take shorter strides hence stairs tire us out fast) but for PWDs, the elderly, pregnant women and children. However if cost is not a limitation then you can lower everything in the house especially light switches , door knobs , sinks and the toilet seat. Accessibility is KEY when it comes to LPs and other PWDs. #accessibility #independentliving
Lifestyle 0 0 4 min read Obesity gisinitiative March 23, 2021 Day 23 of #dwarfismawarenessmonth Letβs talk about the elephant in the room(Pun intended) If there is anything that I have struggled with all my life it is the weight. I have always been on the chubby end of the scale even as child. My weight has been flip flopping and eventually I hit a BIG plateau! I have to blame genetics ( have you met my family ?!) What most people donβt know is that, People with Dwarfism are susceptible to being overweight. PLEASE bear in mind that not all Little people struggle with weight. Some LPs are Maa Shaa Allah BUT We all know the dangers of being obese. On aLittle body the effects are worse as it affects the bones, joints and the spine. It compromises our already poor breathing system and will make our sleep apnea much worse. There have been studies that link achondroplasia (commonest form of Dwarfism) especially to abdominal obesity though causes are yet to be discovered. Most adults with dwarfism tend to become overweight with time although in some cases it starts during childhood , through the teenage years and accelerates as the LP grows older. Medically they rely on the Body mass index (BMI ) as a standard for measuring obesity but it is a height dependent index and will therefore put most LPs at the obese end. This standard of measurement because of my height, which is similar to a childβs, will conclude that I should eat childlike portions! Yβall know how I love my steak All kidding aside, this is a virgin land for nutritionists and dieticians to explore!! (10% commission coz I have been dropping Biz ideas your way throughout my posts) We need viable solutions for the long term. Parents of LPs need to watch out for this raising health problem and put preventive measures in place. We all know prevention is better than cure!! Being mindful of what one eats( ) for adults is the first step. portion control ( a reminder to myself first). The choice of food contributes more to weight gain than the lack of exercise. Introduction of some non aggressive exercise routine such as swimming or light cardio would also go a long way. that is for LPs who have issues with their bones. Otherwise follow an exercise regimen of your choice and keep switching it up to avoid making it boring. Other things to watch out for include sleep habits , stress and anxiety and depression which all contribute to becoming obese. As an advocate of mental health I cannot stress enough the importance of the emotional wellbeing of LPs. We face a double stigma because of the Dwarfism and then the shame that people who are obese, face. This makes it a whole lot worse Communities should also be involved in advocating for healthier children both physically and emotionally. If you make fun of us, exclude us from play activities or from befriending your children these will trigger emotional turmoil that may lead to overeating (binging). Part of this long term plan of having LP adults that are healthy and happy is somewhat tied to how society looks at and how it treats LPs. Be more accepting, kinder and more respectful. (Disclaimer: I am not an expert on weight management clearly ) #happierandhealthier #Weightgoals
Inspiration 0 0 2 min read What I love about being different gisinitiative March 23, 2021 Day 24 of #dwarfismawarenessmonth I am a MASTERPIECE I was made by the Fashioner of forms ( Al-Musawwir I am unique , I am not like everyone else and this makes up the biggest part of me. I didnβt always love being different but with age I have become more accepting of my dwarfism and it is a huge part of my identity. But thatβs not all I am. I am_so_much_more I am compassionate because I know what it means to be different. I am more accepting of diversity. I have always related to those society deems as misfits. This has influenced my decision to help others regardless of the circumstances. My choosing advocacy work is a personal testimony! I am more grateful Anyone who knows me, knows that I look at things in a positive light. #Godgotme Whatever happens I know there is always a rainbow behind the storm And Indeed Allah is the best of Planners I have been blessed and privileged, surely what God didnβt give me, I didnβt need it Which of the Lord’s favors shall I deny?! Woman on a mission I trust in the Lordβs decree. He created me for a purpose. My journey and life story wouldnβt have come out the same way if I wasnβt the way I am. I have inspired so many because of the challenges I have overcome and how I choose to live my life!I am one of #GodsSoldier!! Alhamdulillah I am beautiful in every single way! I am beautiful in every single way! Beauty comes from within you! I am bold and unapologetic And I am not shy to flaunt what I got. I have always been confident but confidence in my beauty as a woman, has been getting better with age! #30sRock #curvyandconfident
Disability 0 0 2 min read Biggest Misconception gisinitiative March 23, 2021 Day 26 of #dwarfismawarenessmonth One of the biggest misconceptions of the 21st century must be that tallness = success and that people with Dwarfism cannot amount to anything of significance. You donβt necessarily have to be tall to be successful. We have so many examples from history of short people bringing their A game. LPs have surely come a long way from being sidekicks in comedy strips and as part of the circus sideshow. Please know that there is nothing wrong with pursuing a career in comedy but the issue is how society assumes that we are nothing more than that. We have among the Ugandan LP community; parents, entrepreneurs, comedians, teachers, social workers, farmers, Data analysts, accountants, bankers, and a whole lot other professionals doing well in their careers and personal lives. We have LPs that are taking care of their families including financially supporting others within our communities. When I was born in the 80s there was no hope for someone like me , but now we have squashed the myths.β I was judged based on the body I came in. My first success as a child was being the most academically gifted child in the entire family. (a record that remains undefeated) I have continued to open eyes and minds within my family and beyond with various achievements that none of my average height family members have. Alhamdulillah And we shall continue to break down the walls of biases and misconceptions through educating the masses that #naffeTusobola. Most of this progress has come with communities being more knowledgeable and informed about dwarfism. This has opened up spaces for us in schools, training institutions and workplaces but also inspirations from LPs that have defied the odds and live lives of #noexcuses!! As long as we continue raising awareness, we hope for a future of limitless possibilities for all LPs. I am proof that height doesnβt really matter!! #Breakinglimits #BeyondLabels #successmindset
Disability Science 0 0 3 min read Brittle Bone Disease gisinitiative March 23, 2021 Day 27 of #dwarfismawarenessmonth Medically my condition is defined as Osteogenesis Imperfecta(OI). Loosely it means my bones were not properly formed. There are different cases of it and variants such as osteopetrosis the one i think I may actually have. ( page Dr.Ashar) Part of my type of Dwarfism is getting recurrent fractures. My bones are like glass, they break easily and donβt unite. And this is why I use a wheelchair. As a child I had to miss out on physical play time because the few times I tried , I would get a fracture almost every single time. My siblings dreaded playing with me, it was VERY hard on me as a child because they feared to break my bones accidentally. All that loneliness. I have had so many fractures and I have forgotten the exact number but they are so many that it no longer freaks me out or my family that much when I get a new fracture. I can call Aminah and ask her to buy some groceries and in the same breath I ask her to meet me in the ER!! I have literally broken almost every bone including the back and the skull. I have had surgeries to correct the fractures but with no success yet. So I move around with broken bones, literally!! (Yeah, I can be dramatic ) I need to go in for surgery every few years for maintenance of the plating and screws that are fixed to give me some mobility and less pain. Some of the surgeries have however brought on more disability than before!! I used to live in the emergency room back in the day but things have gotten better with time. My ONLY problem now is the weight that makes a terrible situation worse!! This has always been our disease , something that bonded us. My two LP aunties , my brother Mate , and I. The only difference is that he gets them just as frequent if not more frequently ( guy is too active, NEVER sits down) but he heals within the usual 12 weeks. My aunties too, used to get them as much but would heal. I am therefore on my own on this one. My doctors have failed to figure out why the non union occurs! Alhamdulillah I have accepted this and I make do with what I have! You might assume my life is sad, far from it!! I live a simple happy life!! Well, maybe not so simple The Quran saysβ No soul shall be burden beyond what it can bearβ. The Bible too, says something similar. God got me, I trust in HIm and He is the best of Planners. Alhamdulillah for absolutely everything! #Glassbones #Medicalmyster
Work 0 0 3 min read The End of being Comic relief gisinitiative March 23, 2021 Day 28 of #dwarfismawarenessmonth People base their perception of LPs on what has erroneously been presented in the media for centuries. To that end, people assume we are only good for your entertainment and thatβs it. People find it near impossible to imagine LPs as equal, normal citizens, your regular everyday people. Yet we are very much pretty regular. The most successful examples of LPs Ugandans know of are; Movie actors and reality TV personalities from places like America and the UK. It hasnβt also helped that we donβt have at least in the African or Ugandan context LPs that are excelling or in the limelight for good reason. And this doesnβt mean that we are not doing amazing things , because we are ,but we have NO visibility. We need to see more LPs in politics, some are already there but more needs to be done. We need to gun for the big leagues, like MP! We need to see more LPs in the public sector. We are yet to see the President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni appoint an Lp in the cabinet. Yes, we can totally be ministers, or Permanent secretaries or commissioners. In the Arts we need to see better content in the series or theater plays, but cast in strong and intelligent roles ,away from the usual jolly or comic characters. Society cannot imagine LPs working in a full time job, but you should because many of us are qualified in different fields and itβs the barriers such as attitudes and perceptions and the physical environment that are holding us back. We need to see more Ugandan LPs as teachers, nurses, doctors, lawyers Company executives, I want us to be MDs and CEOs at Absa Bank Uganda , Bank of Uganda, MTN Uganda, Airtel Uganda, Coca-Cola, etc I want to see someone who looks like me, on Tv as News Anchors and show hosts. We need to show that we are more than jesters. That we can hold down our jobs, can pay our bills and can live independently. We need to see more LPs represented in the beauty industry. On magazine covers, we have gorgeous women in our community and very handsome men. I am not sure why the media has completely shut us out?! Ugandan LPs must stand up for their rights and demand a seat at the table not as a token but a voice that is heard. We could also just create our own table and showcase all our awesomeness The narrative must change and now is the time! To the media; broadcasting, print and online the ball is in your court. Try to right your wrongs! #adequaterepresentation #LittlePeopeVisibility #naffetusobola
Lifestyle 0 0 5 min read Beauty and Fashion; gisinitiative March 23, 2021 Day 29 of #dwarfismawarenessmonth Jaliah Rashidah , my fashionista, this one’s for you!! Most women fuss over their looks, thatβs a given. We want our hair to be perfect, our skins to be flawless and our clothes to be impressive. I come from a line of very beautiful and fashionable women. If you know any female in my family, you know how we do it. So I was raised to always present my best self, regardless of the circumstances. And I live with a woman who has over 100 pairs of heels in different colors , shades and textures. Donβt get me started on her bag collection!!Princess Sharmirah Kimbugwe tell them!! But anyone who knows me , knows that I love looking good.( no games) Looking good for me evens the playing field a bit. If you are going to stare at me , why donβt I wow you instead?! I make a deliberate effort to look good for me, and if it pleases others ,well and good. Unfortunately the beauty industry excludes women with disabilities and by extension Little women. No one makes clothes for our bodies! No one makes clothes specifically for LPs. So we struggle with finding the right clothes and this applies to both men and women. Kids clothes may fit some LPs that are tiny but they still are kids clothes and not all may be worn by an adult. You donβt want to be caught in frills and bows and butterflies or in suspenders and I love buying clothes ( shocker ) but then most arcades that carry variety are inaccessible for me while the upscale ones cater for a certain body size. And letβs just say the styles are not fit for a Hijabi. So for me like most LPs, shopping for clothes and shoes is a HUGE dilemma. (In comes ,my fairy godmother) Alhamdulillah I am privileged and blessed to have an in house glam squad and Aminah got game!! This girl is gifted, Maa shaa Allah So she takes care of all my shopping needs. She knows the right cut and style that flatters me I love color and I donβt shy away from mixing it up. We literally have all colors of scarves!! She buys from everywhere and most pieces come as separates but she knows how to switch, match and blend them!! We buy average height clothes and our tailor alters them. Bless Namu and her good hands. She has mastered the art of cutting up and stitching it all perfectly. My brother Mate does the same thing with his pants and shirts.( he has his own β Namuβ or letβs say Semu Unfortunately these alterations are costly and unaffordable for the average LP. This is another business opportunity, someone that makes custom made clothes for LPs. (Donβt forget my 10% cut) As for the shoes woweee , for this one even me and my stylist struggle hard. Most LPs have short but wide feet. This means most kids shoes canβt fit us. I usually buy the shoes myself because it requires trying them on first. So When we find them, we usually buy in bulk! Someone let me know if you come across a size 2 wide US . It has to be an ordinary shoe ( nothing cutesy). This is another business idea, LP shoes with adult type of styles for both men and women. You are welcome To the beauty industry just be a little more inclusive in your products and services! The media hold the designers and fashion houses accountable including our Ugandan labels!! Finally to my LP sisters, i am not saying wear makeup or buy expensive clothes, ( looking fantastic doesnβt mean breaking the bank) just make a little effort in how you look, it could just be your smile and thatβs all #iffabulouswasahijabi #flauntyourstyle
Lifestyle Science 0 0 3 min read Depression and Suicide; gisinitiative March 23, 2021 Day 30 of #dwarfismawarenessmonth Mental health includes our emotional, psychological and social well being. Having mental health problems means being emotionally, psychologically and socially unhealthy. Examples of mental health challenges include but are not limited to; anxiety, sadness, loneliness, isolation and social exclusion, fear, feeling helplessness, worthlessness, hopelessness and despair. This can turn into depression and suicidal tendencies. Warning signs; poor sleep patterns, self isolation, lack of interest in anything, mood swings, poor eating habits, low energy, pains and illness, dependency on drugs, alcohol or sex, forgetfulness, etc As a big mental health advocate and as someone who has struggled with issues of mental health, it would be remiss if I didnβt discuss the need for openly talking about our struggles and silent battles whether we have a disability or not. If You or someone you know, has depressive thoughts and symptoms, seek help in any way; speak to a friend, a trusted relative or professional help. We should address mental health issues the same way we have addressed HIV/ AIDS, cancer and now #COVID19! Little people are stigmatized, ridiculed and discriminated against by people of average height and those without disabilities. I donβt think there is any little person who has not suffered verbal abuse while 80% of us have been physically abused at least once in our lives. On top of this we find life challenging because of the physical environment being disabling but also the chronic pains that most LPs have and trauma from having multiple surgeries for those of us with orthopaedic problems. Depression is very common although rarely, talked about in the African setting and sadly in the disability and dwarfism communities, we donβt speak about it. Suicide is also common though not given the attention it warrants within our communities. If a person without dwarfism or with disability kills themselves, society including the media doesnβt take it as a huge deal compared to when a person without disability kills themselves. Itβs like we are not that useful and therefore our death is not a big deal and can even be looked at as a mercy for us. But most of our people are facing mental health problems. And most of these come from the way society looks at and treats us. From the staring to the being overlooked and undermined, to abuse and bullying. We therefore need to have a meaningful discussion about bias and discrimination. You should all do a whole lot better but also teach those around you to do better too. If you can, support the conversation about mental health among persons with disabilities including Little people. #mentalhealthawareness #TalkAboutIt
